It was a Brit dominated night at the 71st Emmy awards, with many British stars taking home the prizes from across the pond. Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag picked up most of the comedy awards with Game of Thrones taking home the prize for best drama.

Originating from Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s one-woman show at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, Fleabag emerged to be a big winner of the night, with 6 wins including outstanding writing, best comedy series and picking up best director for a comedy series for Harry Bradbeer. Waller-Bridge also took home the prize for best actress.

Game of Thrones was the biggest winner of the night, having been nominated for 32 awards, the most nominations for a television series ever, picking up 12 of those awards. The show also picked up the night’s most prestigious prize, best drama, which brought the night to a close, despite the final series receiving a mixed response from fans and critics.

As she took to the stage to accept the show’s fourth award of the night, she exclaimed:

“This is getting ridiculous! Fleabag started as a one-woman show at the Edinburgh festival in 2014, and the journey has been absolutely mental to get here.”

Other British winners included Ben Whishaw for best supporting actor in a limited series for his role in BBC’s One’s A Very English Scandal, Charlie Brooker for best television movie for Netflix’s Bandersnatch and British writer Jesse Armstrong for best writing for a drama series.
