Emily's Blog: On-Set Tips for Your First Filming Day

IPM’s sister company, Rossi pictures, opened up onset opportunities for me as an intern. For a student with little experience working on a professional set, the series of production days I became involved in proved to be massively beneficial. Not only did it allow me to build up my CV with professional credits, but it also helped me to understand in further depth how an indie film set operates. It gave me with the opportunity to observe how the director works and interacts with the actors to create a final piece they envision.

On numerous occasions, I was lucky enough to step up and become the 3RD AD which involved some of the following responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that the first and second Assistant Directors were supported in every capacity
  • Preparing, cueing and directing any background action
  • Ensuring that the extras, who are often on set for long periods of time but only used for small sections of filming, are well looked after
  • Liaising with the Location Manager so that any extra responsibilities were carried out. E.g. ensuring the premises were left secure and clean after shooting

ADVICE I WOULD GIVE TO THOSE GOING ON SET FOR THE FIRST TIME

1. Be early! It always sets the best impression. Production companies have complex schedules to film specific scenes at specific times. Make sure you have enough time to get to the film set and don’t rely on internet route finders for accuracy. If using public transport, check the timetables and catch the earlier bus or train to be a step ahead of delays.

2. Respect the chain of command!
3. WRITE THINGS DOWN! Always keep a pen and paper in close proximity to you. It is always useful to take a note of things so it helps you to remember and prioritise designated jobs.
4. KIT! Don’t touch anyone else's kit unless you are asked to assist in packing it away or moving it.
5. Understand that mistakes happen! Everybody learns from their mistakes; admit your mistake, correct it and move on. You’re still in the process of learning!
6.  Always smile and stay enthusiastic. Filming days can be long and hard but everyone is in the same situation so stay positive and animated and the people around you will be sure to acknowledge your energy.

But most importantly, make sure to HAVE FUN!! Being on set is an amazing opportunity and an exciting experience. It’s a brilliant, cool industry to be a part of!
