What is a headshot ?

A headshot is a portrait photograph that focuses on an actors face. A headshot is used to showcase your look but mainly used for casting directors. A headshot is the chance for a Casting Director to see what you look like before they call you in and meet you in person.
This is a vital factor and a key reason as to why your headshots need to be of a great standard.

Below you will find some top tips which will help you get the best out of your headshots.

Top Tips
  • Make sure your headshots look like you - A casting director has called you in because they like your look from your headshots. So they will be expecting that same looking actor when they meet you in person.
  • Keep your headshots up to date. It has been estimated that every 2 years is the best time to refresh your shots, unless you have any changes in appearance between that time; Hair length or colour.
  • Less is more- Natural and clean shots are more appealing to Casting Directors. It is like a blank canvas. This leaves the CD with the opportunity to visualise you in the roles they’re looking for. It is easier to visually add to a face than take away what they can already see.

Remember that your headshot is your first opportunity for getting seen by a casting team.  So be one step ahead and put your time into getting a great set of headshots that showcase you.

  •  Make sure you have a variety of looks - three shots minimum, all shots represent you in your best light showing your versatility.
  • Prioritise expression and personality -  Your personality needs to come through in your shots to show variety so it is helpful to book in with a photographer that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
  •  Know what colours suit you (clothing & back drops) - choose colours that help bring your eyes out and complement your skin tone. Clothing with block colours always work best on camera, steer away from patterned tops. Less is more.
These headshots are examples of showing variation through expression. No need to add accessories to show a difference in emotion.
