Looking at the Future: Films Set in 2020

1/31/2020

We have reached the end of January 2020, and yet, there’s still no flying cars! But there are still great films and television being made daily. Here at IPM, we’ve got a list of films that might, at least, make you feel like the future is here today. Take a look at our top 5 films set in 2020 with a vision of what filmmakers believed the future would look like.

The Terminator

This one is cheating a little; most of the film is set in the 1980’s, as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s implacable android stalks Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn. Nonetheless, a dark future looms over everything, fantastically visualized by James Cameron; the image of a steel foot stepping onto a mountain of skulls will haunt your nightmares.

V for Vendetta

Speaking of The Matrix, the Wachowski’s produced this sorely underrated adaption of the Alan Moore graphic novel. Hugo Weaving gives a gripping performance as freedom fighter/terrorist V in a vision of a Britain that has fallen to a fascistic police state. Across from him, Natalie Portman plays Evey, who soon learns how precarious freedom is. Let’s hope our 2020’s don’t look like this.

Logan

Hugh Jackman’s swan song as Wolverine, a near-future western where the highways of America are filled with self-driving trucks, and anti-mutant chemicals are in the corn. Deliriously violent, yet hiding a strong emotional core, watch this for a breakout performance by Dafne Keen and an oddly heartwarming (adoptive) father and daughter road trip across a changing landscape.

Pacific Rim

Guillermo Del Toro’s action-packed blockbuster, a dizzying love letter to Japanese kaiju films and mecha anime. When giant monsters threaten the world, humanity builds giant robots to protect itself. Perhaps not the smartest concept of all time, but we all know what we’re here for, and Del Toro delivers; watch on the biggest screen you can find.

Children of Men

Alfonso Cuarón's mediation on the meaning of hope in a hopeless world; an uncompromising vision of a time when childbirth simply ceases, and humanity is on the brink of extinction. It’s up to Clive Owen to protect Clare-Hope Ashitey, the first pregnant woman in over 20 years. Beautiful and quietly defiant; makes for a great dystopian double feature with V For Vendetta.
There are many more films to add to our list including 'Moon', 'A Boy and His Dog', 'Soylent Green', 'Ghost in the Shell', 'Metropolis' and the list goes on. What is one of your favourite futuristic films?
