Getting Started: Successful Career Paths!

For any actor, you may find it hard to break through into the industry. Going to the cinema, or watching a television programme can inspire your career. Seeing how your favourite actor, or even a young star with new name wanting to break through, can encourage you to keep working toward your goals in a screen acting career.

When looking at great actors such as Meryl Streep and Robert di Nero, you will find that they weren't discovered overnight. Even young actors who are making their way in the industry, such as the Award Winning Timothee Chalamet, were rejected for roles. One such role for Timothee was 'Spiderman'. The hard work and dedication that these actors put in their auditions and skills allowed them to stand out in the industry.
Asa Butterfield is an actor who started young making his film debut in 2007 in 'Son of Rambow.' However, his most famous role portraying Bruno in The Boy in the Strip Pyjamas (2008). With praise for his performance, Asa went on to feature in other big films such as Hugo (2011), directed by Martin Scorsese. Asa now plays Otis Milburn in the Netflix original series 'Sex Education' starring alongside Gillian Anderson.

Another young actress breaking her way through the industry Letitia Wright, known for playing Shuri in Marvel's Black Panther (2018).  Letitia is currently nominated for EE Rising Star Award 2019, Letitia made her debut to screen back in 2011 with Holby City and Victim.  One way of getting noticed was emailing to different casting directors about her acting experiences until she was picked for small parts. Letitia has also starred in My Brother the Devil, where she was recognised by Screen International as one of its 2012 Stars of Tomorrow.

Tom Holland, known for playing Peter Parker/Spiderman in the Marvel franchise, started dancing at a young age and performed in Billy Elliot the Musical on the West End. He made his film debut in 2012 in The Impossible, directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, alongside Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. Tom was praised so highly, that there were even rumours he was a contender for an Academy Award nomination. Slowly making his way through the industry with featuring in films such as How I Live Now (2013) and In the Heart of the Sea (2015), it wasn't until 2015 when Tom broke through by being cast as Spiderman in Captain America Civil War (2016) signing on to a six-picture deal with Marvel Studios.

Starting an acting career off by doing a commercial is something a lot of young actors have in common. At the age of three, Abigail Breslin starred in a Toys R Us commercial. She then went on to star in films such as Raising Helen (2004) and The Princess Diaries 2 (2004). However, her breakout role was playing Olive Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine (2006). Her co-stars praised her performances and were astounded by her seriousness of purpose during shooting. She received nominations for SAG and an Academy Award for her performance. Carrying on, she starred in blockbuster such as My Sister Keeper (2009), Zombieland (2009), Ender's Game (2013) as well as starring as Libby Putney/Chanel #5 in television series, Scream Queens (2015).
Looking back at how these actors, and several household names, all started off are different to one another. However, one thing that they all had in common was determination and passion on making a career from acting.

Why Accents are Important for Actors!

1/21/2019

Picture
When furthering your career as an actor, one of the most important things you can do to improve your CV is develop a skill for accents. In recent years, Batman, Superman and Spiderman have all been portrayed by British actors with an eclectic skill for the American accent and with more and more international productions moving to the UK for filming, your range could land you a brilliant role.
Picture

If jumping across the pond seems like a bit of stretch right away though, you don’t need to start with American accents! Begin with the UK regions around you, try a new town or county.
Every one learns in a different ways, but the biggest thing you can do to keep pushing your range in accents is listening! Listen to how vowels are pronounced. How are the words formed? How have they been used in movies that you have seen? And practice, practice, practice!

If you fumble for the first little bit, that's fine! Even the most famous of screen actors let their native accent slip. The most recent example is Margot Robbie in ‘Mary Queen of Scots’, where her Australian accent was found to have slipped through by one of L.A.’s biggest voice coaches, but if you don't try you will never learn!

Stuck on where to start?

Try these regional accents from the UK and then expand from them:

  • English RP (Standard English)
  • Cockney
  • Scouse

Tips on Finding an Agent For Your Acting Career!

1/11/2019

Picture
As much as everyone loves a great story of discovery, not all actors are found on the streets. To get your acting career rolling, an agent will help further circulate your name and profile to important casting directors, ensure contracts are sound and give up-to-date career guidance.
Agents are not, however, one size fits all. There are key things you need to know about getting an agent and signing on to their books. A few things to remember when you look for an agent are:
Picture
What is their specialisation?
Agents can cover directors, writers, actors and even extras. Be sure that they represent artists for the focus you want your career to follow. Is it specifically film, anything for screen or a mix of theatre and screen? You do not want to use your time submitting yourself for representation if they are not going to help you further your career path you want to follow.
Picture

Do you have an updated headshot and CV?
Just like submitting yourself for auditions with casting directors, you must look like your headshot! This is one of the key aspects of you getting into any casting room, as you are what an agent is marketing to the industry and you must be at the top of your performance game and be who they are expecting to walk through the door. If your CV isn't long, your skills and training will help agents further see the qualities they may be looking for in an actor to represent.
Are they charging you to be on their books?
Agents should not ask for upfront fees to be on their books! If they say you have to pay just to sign on, be sure that is something you are comfortable with and ask where that fee goes. Commissions are the negotiated percentage they will make when you book the work they find you auditions for!
Picture
Picture
Ask Questions and do the Research!
Ask yourself things like 'does this agent have the qualities and contacts I need?' or 'Do they have requirements to be considered for representation and can I meet those requirements?'

If you have made it through the door of an agency for an audition, research the company to be sure you know who they are, their clients and how your presence on their books would benefit not only yourself, but them! You may find that you have questions for them to answer just as they will definitely have questions for you.
