Actors Can Be Shy Too! - Building Confidence for Film & Television!

8/13/2019

Have you ever thought about going into acting, but felt like your shyness stops you from going anywhere near a camera? Believe it or not, but some of the most famous film stars have been known to be very shy before acting; possibly like yourself. Here is IPM's list of some of our favourite celebrities who are introverted despite being in the spotlight for so long!

Selena Gomez
Despite becoming a Disney star at ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’, Selena stated "My first audition did not go well. I was very awkward. It was in front of a bunch of suits at Disney and I definitely felt I blew it. It took me a long time to let go." Since acting, Selena has used her confidence to succeed in the music industry.

Justin Timberlake
Another old Disney star from back in the days, "I was very shy as a kid. But when I found out I could perform and have people's attention, everything changed." Now he can act, sing, and dance. Is there anything Justin can’t do?

Robert Pattinson
The twilight vampire also known as Edward Cullen said "I was shy, withdrawn and I didn’t have any self-esteem. The year that I was 17 was one of the worst of my life, because I was searching for my place in the world. I was obsessed with a girl for years, but I never talked to her because I was extremely shy." Who would’ve thought that even vampires could be shy right?

Britney Spears
One of the most iconic pop singers from the early 2000s, Britney said "It's weird because I think people think because of what I do I'm like, 'Da-na', but at heart I'm very shy... When I'm in front of the camera I know what to do, but I get in a room, stuck with four guys, I'm like the shyest girl in there." Just think, if it wasn’t for Britney, we wouldn’t be lip synching our greatest performances in our rooms to ‘Baby one more time’.

Lady Gaga
Despite being known for her crazy and bold character, The 'A star is Born' actress and pop singer said "I generally really keep to myself and I am focused on my music. But when I do meet people that I have lots in common with it goes really well. I always feel shy in the Hollywood scene."

Beyoncé
Even after performing on stages with thousands of audiences, Beyoncé says "I get really uncomfortable when I'm not performing on the stage or on a photo shoot and have too many people looking at me expecting a performance." Well Beyoncé, just know that you’re ‘irreplaceable’, so we’ve always got your back and are ready when you are.
Vanessa Hudgens
High School Musical’s Gabrielle Montez said "I was a very shy and quiet kid until my parents took me to see my first Disney movie, Snow White. After that, I would always hum and sing the songs and dress up as Snow White. Funny how dressing up and singing songs in High School Musical actually made me a part of the Disney family." Looks like she was able to ‘break free’ into her confidence.

Tom Cruise
Growing up, Tom Cruise struggled with being shy and dyslexia. However, acting changed this for him as it helped him embrace his shyness and dyslexia by using them as a strength. Tom said “I had to train myself to focus my attention. I became very visual and learned how to create mental images in order to comprehend what I read.”

So if you ever still feel like you have to be more outgoing as a person to go into acting, think about some of the biggest celebrities who are still more reserved despite their sucesses. Remember, there are many people who work in the acting industries with many different personalities. You just need to start by telling yourself that you can do it!
