The first thing a casting director looks at for potential actors to call in for their casting sessions is their headshot. If the headshot catches Casting's attention, you’ve already made the first step in getting through that door. There many opportunities that can come from having an incredible headshot, even if you do not have a full actors CV just yet! Take a look at the importance of your headshots and some things to keep in mind for your career! |
Why You Need an Actor's Headshot
Agents and top casting directors pay close attention to how professional an acting headshot looks, and it can tell them how well the actor understands the industry. It is your marketing tool. Good quality headshots and a photographer who knows the industry will get a lot more attention to your acting profile.

What Makes a Professional Headshot? What makes a professional headshot is the photographer's knowledge of the industry. Proper framing, light and wardrobe are key alongside making sure that your headshots look like you! Over editing and poor light will not give casting the right impression and will not show them what you really look like. In recent years casting directors have even moved away from Black and White photography to help them better get to know who they could potentially be auditioning for a role! |
Keeping up-to-dateJust like the film industry that is always changing, you are always changing. Hair styles, hair colour, weight loss, muscle gain, you name it, a single year can change a person greatly. Being sure that you are updating your headshots so that casting sees you exactly as you will be walking into the room is the biggest thing to remember. Casting directors across the UK recommend that you update your headshots at least every 12 months. |
Variety of Shots
Variety is the spice of life! Be sure to have a good range of headshots. Professional headshot photographers will be able to help you get a range of looks for commercial, film and television WITH OUT being cheesy with character outfits or props! Have the headshots ready for the roles you want!
