The nominees for the RTS awards, one of Britain's most prestigious, have been announced - and it's a strong night for comedy, with all three of those nominated in the Breakthrough category being so for comedic performances. If you seek inspiration and motivation, just look below for our rundown of the comedy awards.
American comedian Tim Renkow, also up for the Breakthrough Award, has propelled himself into the list with his starring role in the gut-busting and deeply uncomfortable Jerk, based on his own experiences and stand-up comedy; a series which turns stereotypes and representations of disability in art on their head by portraying Renkow himself, who has cerebral palsy, as a truly horrendous man, always looking for ways to use his condition to his advantage (usually to the detriment of others). Not for the feint of heart or humour! The second series of BBC's Motherland, now in it's second series, is up for multiple awards, including the final Breakthrough Award nomination for Tanya Moodie and a Best Comedy Performance (Female) nomination for Diane Horgan. Motherland concerns the bitter social warfare that happens between a group of working mothers; Moodie plays Meg, a high-flying business executive who releases the stress of a busy worklife and busier homelife through explosive partying, while Horgan plays Liz, a blunt figure of chaos who proves unpopular with the more successful mothers. A rowdy, raucous experience.
Derry Girls has tough competition in both of these categories, however; Fleabag, written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge, now world famous and writing the next James Bond film, has also been nominated for both Best Scripted Comedy and Best Comedy Performance (Female). The series barely needs introduction, but if you've been living under a rock, Waller-Bridge...in fact, we won't tell you. You just have to see it for yourself. Rounding off the Best Scripted Comedy nominations is Stath Lets Flats,a family sitcom about an inept letting agent trying his hardest to work with his father, who makes him look positively competent by comparison. The nominations for Best Comedy Performance (Male) are going to Ncuti Gatwa for his endearing performance as Eric in Netflix's brutally honest coming of age comedy Sex Education, Youssef Kerkour for his role in the social satire Home as Sami, a Syrian immigrant discovered hiding in the boot of a middle-class family after a holiday in France, and Alex Murphy & Chris Walley for their trouble-making double act in the dark yet heartfelt Irish teen comedy The Young Offenders. Whew! With a line-up like this, it'll be difficult to choose the best of the lot - and this is just the awards for comedy! Good luck to everyone; we'll be watching with attentive eyes, for sure. Your confidence and passion for the screen is a great start to an acting career, but that isn’t all there is to a being a professional screen actor. You may know the lines and have the look the director wants, but many actors find they are not really ready to be on camera once they got in front of the camera. Our team has put together a few tips on how to fix that: |
Film Yourself, Watch Yourself, Critique Yourself
From the right movements to the realism of a character, seeing your performance can help you improve your understanding of the character and find what is working and what is not working for your performance. Not sure how-to best film yourself or what to film between roles? Try any script, monologue or performance you want to do in your future career. This can always be filmed on your phone for quick playback! |
You must know your good and bad habits.
Everyone has their own habits, some that help enhance a character and others that may break the character. If you know your habits and can find the control you need, you will be steps ahead of many other actors. Directors will want the character to have their own habits and yours may not always be a match. Acting coaches can help find these habits as well and give you tips on how to control them. |
Be present
Screen performances are always in the moment. Not having a full connection to your character will be evident in your performance. Not having their mindset and ticks, or not understanding their emotions. will come across the screen. Living in the moment and embracing character’s strengths, flaws and more, is what creates a memorable audition and performance. |
You’re off script, you know your character in and out, now keep practicing these tips to be ready for your next production!

After the 2018 announcement that Channel 4 is moving its National Headquarters to the Yorkshire city of Leeds, many of us film and TV fanatics presumed it couldn’t get much better than that. But good news! Larry Budd and Paul Dunphy, the award-winning pair of comedy sketch writers and BBC radio presenters, have launched a new independent comedy production outfit, Northern Imposters Productions. That’s right; Leeds is to be home to yet another exciting production company!
With the intention to create and produce fresh Northern comedy, the company has set its sights on developing scripted comedy for both TV and Radio, whilst aiming to draw on the extensive pool of talent that the North has to offer. Larry & Paul are two lads based in Leeds, who create comedy sketches that they release on YouTube every Saturday, alongside a weekly radio show on BBC Radio Leeds. Their passion for comedy combined with their recognition that Leeds’ comedy platform has potential to grow has led them to create a production company that brings Northern talent to the world's attention. By utilising the North's pool of talented comedy artists, they aim to produce content that has a Northern stamp on it, but broad national audiences.
Having already won awards for their content and engaging sketches, Northern Imposters Productions will definitely be a company to watch. Details about the company's specific commissioning strategy, further staffing, and submission procedures will be announced at a later date but make sure to keep your eyes peeled as more great opportunities unfold in Leeds! Whether it’s the start of your acting career, or your foot in the door as a runner, there are many great opportunities opening each day in Yorkshire!

The first thing a casting director looks at for potential actors to call in for their casting sessions is their headshot. If the headshot catches Casting's attention, you’ve already made the first step in getting through that door. There many opportunities that can come from having an incredible headshot, even if you do not have a full actors CV just yet! Take a look at the importance of your headshots and some things to keep in mind for your career! |
Why You Need an Actor's Headshot
Agents and top casting directors pay close attention to how professional an acting headshot looks, and it can tell them how well the actor understands the industry. It is your marketing tool. Good quality headshots and a photographer who knows the industry will get a lot more attention to your acting profile.

What Makes a Professional Headshot? What makes a professional headshot is the photographer's knowledge of the industry. Proper framing, light and wardrobe are key alongside making sure that your headshots look like you! Over editing and poor light will not give casting the right impression and will not show them what you really look like. In recent years casting directors have even moved away from Black and White photography to help them better get to know who they could potentially be auditioning for a role! |
Keeping up-to-dateJust like the film industry that is always changing, you are always changing. Hair styles, hair colour, weight loss, muscle gain, you name it, a single year can change a person greatly. Being sure that you are updating your headshots so that casting sees you exactly as you will be walking into the room is the biggest thing to remember. Casting directors across the UK recommend that you update your headshots at least every 12 months. |
Variety of Shots
Variety is the spice of life! Be sure to have a good range of headshots. Professional headshot photographers will be able to help you get a range of looks for commercial, film and television WITH OUT being cheesy with character outfits or props! Have the headshots ready for the roles you want!
